Kitchen Island Make-Over - House Project #1
We just bought a new home :) and we are slowly starting to up-date portions of it. We started in the kitchen. The kitchen was all light maple with brass hardware. First we changed out all of the hardware to a dark venetian bronze. We love it and that alone made a big difference. The island in the kitchen is large and has a beautiful piece of granite, however, with all of the light wood, the granite basically disappeared. We thought it would be fun to paint the island black for a little contrast with the cabinets and help the granite POP out. It worked. Before we started, we added some molding around the bottom and on the sides to add texture and depth. It made a big difference in the over all look of the island. We removed all of the gloss with a deglosser and painted the cabinets with Behr Premium Plus. Here is our new look. What do you think?
We still have more to do in the kitchen: paint, add new appliances and hang a chandelier, but I think we are off to a great start!

Wow! Your new home looks beautiful!
ReplyDeleteMeredith - I miss your blog since you went private :( Can I be invited to view it? I miss seeing you and your cute family.
ReplyDeleteThat black island really looks great! You both did a wonderful job.
ReplyDeleteLooks great, Nae!
ReplyDeleteI have wanted to do that to our ugly kitchen island for three years, but I've been too scared. You're making me feel a little braver. How did the deglosser work? Did you have to sand at all? Do you have any drawers or cupboard doors on the other side?
ReplyDeleteIt looks fabulous!!
Looks Awesome! Can't wait to see more :)
ReplyDeleteBritt - You can do it! The deglosser worked pretty well. Just make sure to coat the surface really well. You will feel the difference on the wood (it will feel sanded) We did not sand at all and it saved a ton of time! We do have cupboards and drawers on both sides of the island. We took all the drawers and cupboards off, then all of the hardware. We taped up the island really well and I painted that with a brush. Talmage took all of the drawers and cupboard doors and painted them with a sprayer. We both think the hand painted actually looked better. We used an eggshell finish so you really don't see brush marks. It only took a couple of days. I've heard after you degloss, you should paint within 3 hours. Home Depot has great options for paint, so you don't have to use a seperate primer and then an oil base paint - although that would probably be the best as far as durability. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteIt looks awesome!!!! I can't wait to see more. Congratulations on your new home, it is beautiful!!
